Buy a car with confidence
A few critical steps for buying
a car-new or used-with confidence.
Most people, unless they happen to
be mechanics or car experts, don't necessarily look forward to the
experience of buying a car.
This often stems from the discomfort
we fear we'll experience with a pushy salesman, or the pressure
we put on ourselves to make the right decision and avoid buying
a "lemon."
So how do you step onto that car lot
with confidence, ready to make the deal of the century?
I'm glad you asked.
First, know what you're looking
for
Do you want a new car? A used car?
Identify the features you just have to have, and then figure out
which cars have them as well as the aesthetic qualities you seek.
Know your price range
What can you afford and what's your
ceiling?
Understanding your full range, can
provide you with the opportunity to make trade-offs and find the
best package given all of your preferences.
Do your research
If you can get access, go online.
Find the "fair market value"-new
or used-for those -you think you may be interested in.
If you're so inclined, you may even
be able to just buy it online.
But, I do recommend you test-drive
before you do which means
Find a reputable dealer
Ask around and get referrals for respectable
dealers.
Mention the name of the individual
who referred you-the sales reps may take your effort to do the research
as a sign that you're a serious buyer, and may be more willing to
work on negotiating a deal that is mutually beneficial.
Remember, you have the upper hand
They have the parking lot full of
cars, and you have the dough.
And, there's lots of competition out
there.
- So, don't fall for any pressure
tactics (one-day only sale, etc.).
- Comparison shop.
- Don't be afraid to leave with their
best offer, and run it by another dealer to see if they can do
better.
- Let them know you have clear understanding
of the fair market value for the car you are considering.
- Don't agree to the deal, until
you are 100% sure it's the best deal you can get, and you're comfortable
with all aspects of the terms.
If you prepare, and do your research,
the process of buying a car can be fun.
Challenge yourself to get the best
deal you can get, and you just might outdo yourself!
