PART 2

Is life coaching for you?

Okay, without further a do let’s crack on with this session!

So, is Life Coaching a career that is suited to you?

That is the question that we will be exploring.

To kick this off I’d like you to dig out the list that you made in part 1 – the one about the key skills for a coach.

Got it?

Okay – what I’d now like you to do is to rate yourself on a scale of 0-10 down the side of each one of how you compare to this skill.

So, if you have put down that a key skill is that of an excellent listener – rank yourself 10 if you walk on water and a 0 if you find it difficult to listen at all!

Complete this exercise now before moving on.

Back with me?

If you haven’t completed that exercise get back and do it now!

Did you have any scores that were less than 7?

If you did, categorise these into one column or take a coloured pen and put an asterix by the side of it.

These are some of the key skills that you will have to develop and develop them well if you are to make it in the coaching profession.

Something to ponder

“Do you have it within you to master these scores that are below 7?”

“Do you have the time, effort and committed to make these a reality?”

Be completely honest with yourself.

The reason why I say 7 is that there is so much competition out there, anything less than 7 will just not cut it!

Over the page is my list of the key skills that are required to become a coach:

The key skills you will need to succeed as a Life Coach

  • Listening – not just hearing/reading, read between the lines
  • Able to give constructive feedback
  • Observing – the underlying and act upon it
  • Analysing – the information you receive
  • Ethics – confidentiality
  • Communication – all types
  • Timing – knowing when the client is ready to go onto next stage, when to ask what type of question
  • Assimilation – of information you receive
  • Organisation – work load and the information you receive from clients
  • Empathy – for whatever the client need/want/etc.
  • Question – knowing when to ask what type of questions being closed or open-ended
  • Complimentary – when appropriate
  • Motivational – to make clients feel good about themselves and what they do and want to do
  • Empowering – to urge clients towards success
  • Energetic – I have included this skill because I think it is important that a life coach shows a reasonably high level of energy to be able to motivate
  • Positive – outlook, tone of voice/writing, approach to work, people and life
  • Idea forming – to be able to assist clients with new ideas
  • Research – to keep up to date with what is happening in the world generally and you will obviously encounter areas that you am not familiar with and will therefore have to do a bit of research to know what the client works with or want to work with, or whatever it is that they are being coached about

Just as before, I’d like you to rank yourself against my list this time and bundle together all of your scores that are less than 7.

The good news is that if you have got any scores above 7, you are already halfway there for that skill!

Jot those scores down – in the case of these scores it will be a case of fine tuning!

So you should be building up a picture now to decide whether Life Coaching is for and that you have got the right skills.

Let’s go one step further and take a quick test!

Time To Do Some Exploring
Ask yourself if being a coach really is the best fit for you. Does your intuition tell you that you landed on this site for a reason? Is this a goal to pursue?
A smart move—regardless of the direction you head—is to hire a mentor coach to support you in achieving your goals.

A score of 0-10

Pursuing a career in coaching is most likely not the right path for you at this time.
If you're still interested in exploring the profession, we have some suggestions. The most beneficial way to go after your goals—whatever they may be—is to hire your own coach. You'll not only benefit from the tremendous value a coach brings to your life but you'll also gain first-hand knowledge of the coaching experience.
In time, you may reach a point when you know—with certainty—that becoming a coach is what is meant for you.

That’s it for this time, I hope you enjoyed this session.

Next time we will be covering:

How to become a coach - training, qualifications, options, legal
issues, regulations

Until then, take care of yourself and Live, Love and Laugh!
