When you reach a certain age, especially nearing retirement, consulting becomes a very promising career. Life coaching or taking on the mantle and becoming a life coach is a type of consulting which is very popular amongst older people and can be undertaken without a lot of effort. Not to mention, there is a lot of money to be made if one has passed the relevant qualification and set up a practice.

The first step is undertaking higher education. Of course this is not necessary as far as the practice of a life coach is concerned but many people in this field although have post graduate degrees or post doctorates and if you wish to compete with them on an equitable basis, your best chance is to at least be an under grad degree holder for which you will put aside four years. If you are young and just starting out in life you can even take courses which are specific to the career of a life coach.
Counseling and the study of psychology are more relevant than anything else for someone to become a life coach so focus on subjects which offer you a greater insight into people and their personalities.
For people that have already passed college and cannot reenter or are unwilling to, there are specific courses which are accredited to this choice of career and they can set you up to win.
The ICF or IAC will then give you a proper license or certification or both so that you can actually start coaching people. However you still do need a genuine interest and passion in the profession and for the prospect of bettering someone’s life or better yet guiding it towards a better path.
Life coaching cannot be studied like medicine for example so attending the right seminars are key as they teach everything from particulars to how to address and deal with people.
This career is promising in the long run but in the beginning you will not be making a lot of money. Since the industry itself is very saturated, it will take some time for you to make your mark although exceptional communication skills are definitely helpful towards that aim.
Although life coaches are often picked up by major corporations, you need not wait for that opportunity and you can always start a private practice and get clients that way.
