Today we sit down with a true search engine optimization expert – Tim Schmidt. He’s been helping people make money with their websites dating back to 2002, which puts him in the ancient category of Internet Optimizers. He’s been featured in Inc. Magazine, numerous other publications, and is a writer for the Huffington Post.
It’s with great pleasure to bring in someone at the top of his game. Today, in addition to running his Fort Lauderdale SEO agency, Tim helps teach others how to become an expert in making money money online through SEO efforts. He’s what I call a “niche life coach.”
I sat down with Tim to find out a bit more about what it takes to become an SEO expert. These are the excerpts of our chat.
There are three main ways of thinking for search engine optimization. These are technical, analytical and creative where technical skills are needed in so that you can understand the way in which websites can be developed and be configured. The analytical skills are required to look into several and unpredictable and many times vague sources of data to identify the problems and then subsequently look for opportunities. Creative skills are important and required for developing content which is of good quality which will lure visitors to be happy and also attract other websites to link with your website. It is very rare that one person holds all these skills and so one cannot be an expert in all of these skills. Therefore, to be an expert in search engine optimization, you should be aware of what your strong points are and also figure out the different ways to work on your weaknesses and other points holding you back.
You should also know whether you are more towards the technical or more towards the creative side. Creativity would relate to writing and editing copy along with also coming up with good ideas for the content of the editorial. Technical would relate to the writing of the computer codes and be savvy with the back end of the website rather than the side of pictures or text which the visitors on the website see. There are only a handful of people who are actually good at both and if you are like this then you could really excel at search engine optimization.
On the other hand your creativity on the side of the editorial should also lead you to gather more on how websites actually work, and also keep with you a proper list of the different technical details of SEO. In this regard you should not be trusting your own intuition but should be consulting your list. You should also ensure that you have technical support available to implement and analyze the technical aspects of SEO. However, if you are more on the technical side then you should be learning more about writing a good editorial, social marketing networks and link building. You should also keep with you a proper list of what is required from an editorial and the link building. You can also partner with good social media teams. In a nutshell, a team should comprise of these range of skills.
